Web browsers are unusual in that they were traditionally applications but quickly became platforms in their own right, and they have a role as an intermediary between the user and untrusted third-parties which makes the UI and performance challenges more complicated. Most other applications don't have those needs so they’d never want to take on the extra work – Adobe foundered under the weight, and they had a much better starting point than almost anyone else.
